This is a fun question to ask your kids or your friends who have a playful sense of humor.

Is the olive a fruit, or is it a veggie?

Obviously, there is no confusion about the identity of most fruits and veggies, right?

It’s easy to see the difference between a carrot, and a banana...

…an apple, or a head of lettuce. Duh!

Okay, but what about the olive, little smarty pants?

In the case of the amazing olive, it’s not so clear-cut.

So, is the olive a fruit, or is the olive a vegetable?

Technically, the olive is a fruit.

However, culinarily speaking, olives are widely used in savory dishes such as:

  • Hors-d'oeuvres,
  • on their own as snacks,
  • toppings on, well anything,
  • or sliced into salads.

The drupe group

What is a drupe?

Any fruit that has a pit or a stone falls into a group of fruits called drupes.

And, you guessed it, the humble olive can be called, a drupe.

Hey, drupe may not sound pretty, but I’m sure you will agree that the olive tastes yummy!

Which other fruits fall into the drupe group?

Well, other drupe fruits include peaches, mangos, cherries, nectarines, almonds, and pistachios.

Who knew?

The point is, eat plenty of olives!

They taste great, and very few other fruits are as versatile, or as nutritious.

Caution:

Try to avoid store-bought, canned black olives because they are chemically treated with lye to make the olives black.

If you want natural, highly nutritious olives for your family table, choose those grown on the Nuvo family farm.

Coming up soon, we’ll drill deeper into the nutritional benefits of the olive, and why you should eat more of them.
